Vice President of Development

The National Partnership for Women & Families is a nonprofit, nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization that fights for equity for all women and families. We’re passionate about making change on big issues such as equal pay for all women, paid leave for working families and access to affordable health care that provides abortion and reproductive care. We advocate on the Hill and for federal, state and local policy.

We are seeking a Vice President of Development who will be an energetic, creative, and experienced individual with a strong fundraising background. This position leads fundraising across the organization and oversees all facets of the National Partnership’s development activities. The VP is responsible for the design, articulation, management, and implementation of a comprehensive strategy for growing, diversifying, and increasing the sustainability of organizational revenue to meet the strategic goals and operational needs of the organization and ensure its optimum effectiveness.

The Vice President of Development position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the President. The National Partnership is a hybrid organization where a majority of staff are required to report to the office a minimum four (4) days a month.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement long term strategic and annual operating plans for National Partnership fundraising.
  • Guide all development and fundraising activities, including individual giving, institutional giving, events, and other fundraising activities.
  • Manage communications, marketing, and messaging to donors and funders in coordination with the President and VP for Communications and Marketing.
  • Oversee development and production of collateral materials to support fundraising and development activities.
  • Oversee and coordinate corporate fundraising working closely with the VP for Social Impact and Congressional Relations to cultivate relationships with corporate members of the Business Working Group for Gender Equity and other corporations.
  • Engage with National Partnership board members to involve, support and lead them in fundraising activities.
  • Occasionally serve as frontline fundraiser and steward, in collaboration with the President, for the organization’s most significant individual and institutional donors.
  • Collaborate with other VPs to ensure fundraising supports programmatic and advocacy goals.
  • Establish productive relationships and communications with peers at allied organizations.
  • Execute effective team management, supervision, coaching, and professional development of individual staff, with a focus on managing across difference and enhancing equity.
  • Strategically advise the organization on how to diversify fundraising efforts with a focus on achieving equity and justice, as well as implement strategies that help to dismantle white supremacy culture in the organization’s traditional fundraising practices.
  • Perform executive leadership responsibilities—including advising the President on strategic and operational matters; serving as a communication conduit between management and staff, and contributing to overall organizational goals for equitable, inclusive, and team-oriented culture as part of the role of the Executive Team.

Qualifications

The candidate must possess:

  • Strategic and creative thinker with a proven ability to develop, market and execute an integrated, multi-faceted fundraising program capable of growing diversified and sustainable income to meet organizational needs.
  • Proven track record of cultivating and soliciting six-figure and above gifts and increasing both restricted and unrestricted revenue from individuals and institutions.
  • Established relationships with individuals and institutions that fund women’s organizations a plus.
  • Track record of professional growth and increasing responsibility in the field of development for nonprofit organizations.
  • Superior communications abilities, including analytic, written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate a team and individual team members around organizational, team and individual goals.
  • Experience working collaboratively across teams and departments to meet shared goals.
  • Knowledge of CRM platforms.
  • Ability to represent organization in a wide range of situations and venues.
  • A strong commitment to the National Partnership’s mission and its ongoing evolution in racial and gender justice.
  • Sophisticated understanding of how race dynamics impact supervisory relationships, organizational culture, partnerships, campaigns and coalition work, and can demonstrate a history of successfully intervening in problematic dynamics and deepening a racial justice approach within an organization, team, or campaign.

Classification

The National Partnership recognizes a staff bargaining unit, National Partnership United, affiliated with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union/IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is NOT included in the NP United bargaining unit.

Salary and Benefits

The minimum salary starts at $180,353 with exact salary based on total relevant experience. The National Partnership provides a generous benefits package that includes three weeks annual vacation time, paid sick time, paid federal holidays plus the last week of December, health, dental, and vision coverage, 403B and SEP-IRA retirement options, and paid family and medical leave for eligible employees.

Note that accrued vacation and sick time are currently suspended for new employees while the National Partnership temporarily offers ad-hoc unlimited administrative leave for employees during the COVID-19 pandemic, recognizing that we all have a range of caregiving needs, including self-care and care for others during this challenging time.

The Vice President of Development is a full-time position based in our Washington, D.C. office. The National Partnership maintains a hybrid work environment where staff are required to be in the office a minimum of 4 days per month, with additional in-office and in-person days determined by your role and job responsibilities.

Office and Team Culture

The National Partnership is a 50 person staff that fosters a collaborative culture. We have a collegial work environment. The National Partnership is committed to protecting our employees and our communities from COVID-19. Toward that goal, the National Partnership requires all employees to be fully vaccinated and completely up to date via an FDA authorized and/or approved COVID-19 vaccination. Fully Vaccinated is defined by the CDC as being 2 weeks after the final dose in a primary series of COVID-19 vaccines (2 doses of Pfizer or Moderna, 1 dose of Johnson & Johnson). Up to date means a person has received all recommended COVID-19 vaccines, including any booster dose(s) when eligible. New employees must be fully vaccinated before their start date, and up-to-date as soon as eligible, unless an exemption due to a medical condition or a sincerely held religious belief or practice is granted.
