Health Policy and Reproductive Rights Communications Manager

The National Partnership for Women & Families seeks a Health Policy and Reproductive Rights Communications Manager for its communications team. Position Summary

The Health/Repro Communications Manager serves as the liaison between the communications team and the health policy and reproductive health and rights teams. In this role, she or he helps develop and implement the strategies, messages and materials that make the National Partnership’s health policy and reproductive health and rights programs visible to media, policymakers, advocates and the public. The Health/Repro Communications Manager identifies opportunities to disseminate cross-team messages and materials. The National Partnership’s health policy and reproductive health and rights teams work on health system reform, Affordable Care Act defense, contraceptive coverage, abortion care and more.

The Health/Repro Communications Manager reports to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Attend regular program team meetings and manage communications for the health policy and reproductive health and rights teams, including developing promotional plans and timelines and keeping projects on track.
  • Write news releases, press statements, media alerts, editorial memoranda, op-ed pieces, speeches, talking points, remarks, testimony and blog posts on health policy and reproductive health and rights issues.
  • Write and edit fact sheets, issue briefs and reports. In some cases, use desktop publishing software templates to design products.
  • Work with the digital team to develop and review content for the National Partnership’s social media platforms.
  • Develop and sustain relationships with media.
  • Pitch media and handle media queries on reproductive health and rights and health policy issues.
  • Set up and prepare spokespeople for interviews, editorial board meetings, deskside briefings and other such opportunities.
  • Work with external vendors to design and print reports on various health policy and reproductive health and rights issues.
  • Support the communications team’s work to build and maintain a high-quality, consistent brand for the organization in all its public materials.
  • Stay up to date on current events and policy changes related to the health policy and reproductive health and rights portfolios.
  • Build and maintain media lists.


  • Five to eight years work experience in communications, preferably related to health, women’s rights or other progressive public policies.
  • Experience in media relations and in writing media materials.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; ability to work with colleagues in other departments within the National Partnership as well as with external coalition members.
  • Self-motivated team player who can work independently in a deadline-driven environment and successfully manage multiple projects, priorities and timelines.
  • Familiarity with health and/or reproductive health-specific public policy through work on Capitol Hill, with policymakers at the state or national level, on a political campaign or with like-minded advocacy groups a plus.
  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.

Starting annual salary for this position will range from $65-$70K depending on experience and includes a generous benefits package.
