National Partnership Applauds House Passage of the HEROES Act

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Heroes Act 2.0 (H.R. 925) by a vote of 214-207. The bill extends benefits for unemployed workers, housing assistance and will help provide economic stability for businesses and families. Importantly, it also expands and extends emergency paid sick days and paid family and medical leave, closing critical gaps to provide this benefit for more workers. The bill also has notable health provisions. It includes much needed fiscal relief to states by increasing federal Medicaid funding. This helps support states in responding to the increased need for testing and treatment, as well as increased Medicaid enrollment — without having to cut health benefits. It also includes critical public health funding to help address the pandemic more effectively.

Debra L. Ness, President, National Partnership for Women & Families issued the following statement:

“I applaud Speaker Pelosi and House Leadership for advancing this critical aid package that will provide much needed relief for people who are impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. While Senate Republicans and the Trump administration have refused to act on the original Heroes Act, which was passed by the House in May, the pandemic has continued to spread across the country forcing businesses to close their doors, putting workers out of jobs, keeping kids out of school and risking the lives of far too many people. We cannot leave Americans without support, particularly the essential workers and vulnerable populations that have been hardest hit by the pandemic. I urge the Senate to swiftly take up and pass the Heroes Act to provide much-needed assistance to American families and our economy. Inaction is simply not an option.”
