Poor Quality Health Care is Prevalent.
Despite advances in medical technology and research, much of the U.S. health care system does not deliver quality care. In fact:
- Preventable medical errors kill an estimated 98,000 Americans each year (1); it’s the eighth leading cause of death in this country.(2)
- Two million of us pick up infections each year at the hospitals that are supposed to make us well. Around 90,000 people die from those infections. Many more suffer needlessly, are incapacitated or worse.(3)
- Too often, health care is not patient-centered, is uncoordinated and lacks proper follow-up.
