Paid Leave
Unfortunately, millions of workers cannot afford to take the unpaid leave guaranteed by the Family & Medical Leave Act.
Since the FMLA was enacted in 1993, workers have used this ground-breaking legislation more than 100 million times to take job-protected time off to recover from their own serious illness, to care for a seriously ill family member or to bond with a newborn or newly adopted child.
But millions are being left behind. In one survey, among workers who needed family and medical leave but did not take it, three in four said they could not afford to miss a paycheck.
This must change. Working families should not have to choose between the jobs they need and the families they love.
That’s why we’re working with policy makers and advocates across the country to support a range of innovative proposals to make paid family and medical leave available for all working families.
