Family & Medical Leave Act

Are you familiar with the FMLA? Perhaps you’ve already benefited from the job-protected leave it guarantees.

We helped draft this historic legislation and, with your help, will safeguard and expand it to cover more workers who need leave for more reasons.

The FMLA was the first national policy designed to help working Americans meet the dual demands of work and family. It was the first bill signed by President Clinton in 1993.

So far, workers have used it more than 100 million times to take critical time off when necessary without putting their jobs on the line.

The FMLA guarantees eligible employees 12 weeks of unpaid leave each year to care for a newborn or newly adopted child, seriously ill family member, or to recover from their own serious health conditions, while ensuring job security.

It’s a great start, but the FMLA is not enough. And the National Partnership leads a broad-based coalition working to protect and expand this critical legislation.
