The National Partnership for Women & Families seeks an experienced leader to serve as vice president responsible for providing senior leadership to the organization, and strategic oversight of the organization’s work and family program and operations.  This position reports directly to the president, and works closely with the vice president overseeing health care programs and operations.

The National Partnership’s key work and family priorities include:

  • Promoting policies that increase options and opportunities in the workplace to enable workers to better meet the dual demands of job and family. The National Partnership is the organization that created and led the fight for passage of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).
  • Advocating for policies that give women the best chance to succeed in the workplace - policies that reduce discrimination and foster equal opportunity, and enhance economic security for women and families.

To accomplish our goals, we employ a comprehensive set of public policy change strategies:

  • Advocating for the development of effective public policies.
  • Conducting research and analysis that informs policies and public education campaigns.
  • Developing effective messages and outreach campaigns to educate and create a positive climate for the policies we seek.
  • Framing issues and generating coverage through our network of media relationships.
  • Employing the latest communications and web technologies to reach people nationwide.
  • Building and leading broad-based, diverse coalitions to support and engage grassroots allies.
  • Forging partnerships among public and private sector stakeholders at the national and state levels.
  • Supporting state and local advocacy through direct technical assistance, facilitating communication and information sharing between state advocates and policy makers.
Primary Responsibilities 
  • Strategic oversight and development of the National Partnership’s work and family programs policy.
  • Management of various aspects of National Partnership operations (communications, fundraising, administration, human resources and finance), in collaboration with vice president for health care programs and operations.
  • Shaping the organization’s strategic position, national presence and advocacy role with all key audiences including policy makers, the public, media, members, donors and activists.
  • Leadership, supervision, development and coaching of staff.
  • Organizational development activities and initiatives, including those to promote effective team building, collaboration and integration of staff working in various programmatic and operational areas.
  • Oversight of activities that generate revenue to support the organization’s programs, including working with individual donors, foundation funders, online donor outreach, etc.
  • Development of the organization’s strategic and annual operating plans, and maintaining accountability to strategic goals, priorities and activities.
  • Supporting the organization’s president and assisting in strategically positioning the organization.
  • Representing the organization and the organization’s president as needed in public forums, in the press, in Congress and on selected taskforces, workgroups and committees.

Ideal candidates will have a minimum of ten years of experience in work/family and workplace issues. Ability to think strategically, convey strong vision for the future of program areas, and manage teams of experienced professionals is a must. Experience on Capitol Hill or a sophisticated knowledge of the federal legislative process is also required, as is experience participating in and developing coalitions.
