A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday struck down an Arizona law (HB 2036) that bans abortions after 20 weeks from a woman's last menstrual period, ruling that the measure violates Supreme Court precedent prohibiting states from banning abortions prior to fetal viability, the New York Times reports.

North Dakota's law (HB 1456) that bans abortions as early as six weeks of pregnancy and Arkansas' measure (SB 134) to ban most abortions after 12 weeks "are clearly unconstitutional," but the "lawmakers who voted for and signed them know that. In fact, it may well be the whole point of this exercise," according to Andrew Rosenthal of the New York Times.
