La. Senate Advances Bill Requiring Physician's Presence During Medication Abortions
April 24, 2013 —The Louisiana Senate on Monday voted 32-2 to advance a bill (SB 90) that would ban the use of telemedicine during the provision of medication abortions, AP/KSLA reports. The measure also would require a physician to be physically present when a woman takes the drugs.
State Sen. Fred Mills (R), a sponsor of the bill, said it is intended to protect women's health.
However, Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast has argued that its provisions are medically unnecessary and designed to restrict access to abortion.
The legislation now heads to the House (AP/KSLA, 4/22).
