Texas House Comm. Considers Revisions to State Booklet on Abortion

April 12, 2013 — The Texas House State Affairs Committeeon Wednesday heard testimony on a bill (HB 2945) that would modify a state booklet to remove a suggestion that abortion is linked with a heightened risk of breast cancer, the Texas Tribune reports.

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is in the process of revising the "Women's Right to Know" booklet, which is given to women seeking abortions. The booklet states, "While there are studies that have found an increased risk of developing breast cancer after an induced abortion, some studies have found no overall risk," adding, "There is agreement that this issue needs further study."

State Rep. Sarah Davis (R) -- the author of the bill -- said, "There is absolutely no scientific evidence to make this conclusion." She urged committee members to "vote to live in fact and not fiction" (Aaronson [2], Texas Tribune, 4/10).
