Summary:

As introduced, the bill would allow workers employed by businesses with 10 or more employees to receive 20 hours of parental leave per school year to participate in their child's, grandchild's or ward's qualified school-related activities. Workers may use their existing vacation, sick leave, personal leave, compensatory time off or unpaid leave. Employers are prohibited from discriminating against a worker for taking time off to participate in school activities.

The bill was substituted to change the number of hours of parental leave per school year from 20 hours to eight hours. Under the substituted bill, an employer may require workers to take a minimum of two hours of parental leave for each school-related activity and clarifies that qualified school-related activities do not include extracurricular activities such as sporting events, performances or field trips.
