April 17, 2012 — The Iowa Senate last week rejected a budget amendment (S-5207) that would have eliminated state funding for women's health services at any organization that provides abortion care, the Des Moines Register reports. Senators also rejected a proposal (S-5206) that would have prohibited the use of state money for abortion in cases of rape or when a woman's life is in danger.
State Sen. Joe Bolkcom (D) said, "It's time to trust women to make their own choices about their health care providers," adding, "It's time to stop the Republican war on women" (Clayworth, Des Moines Register, 4/12).
