Summary:

Expands Washington's enacted but not yet implemented paid parental leave law into a family and medical leave program. It would allow eligible workers to take paid leave to care for a family member with a serious health condition or to recover from their own serious health condition. "Family member" is defined as a child, spouse, domestic partner or parent. The bill changes the maximum length of paid leave to six weeks for parental or family leave and 26 weeks for leave relating to the worker's own health condition. The benefit rate is changed to 55 percent of the worker's weekly earnings with a minimum of $250 per week for a full-time worker.

The bill further amends the existing law by adding a new funding mechanism: a small portion of wages will be deducted from worker paychecks at regular intervals and deposited into a statewide family and medical leave insurance account.
