Senate Passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act Is Enormous Step Forward, Ness Says

WASHINGTON, D.C. — January 22, 2009 — “The Senate took an enormous step forward to restore fair pay protections by passing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act this evening.
We applaud the Senate for acting quickly to reassert America’s commitment to fairness, and restore longstanding protections against discrimination. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act is a modest and targeted response to a harmful and unjust U.S. Supreme Court ruling that made it just about impossible for victims of pay discrimination to seek justice in the courts, no matter how severe the discrimination they face. Today, the Senate stood with the American people and committed to ending workplace discrimination.
With families struggling in this grim economy, it is more important than ever that we reject wage discrimination and recommit to equal pay for equal work.
This is the best evidence yet that a new era has dawned, and the lawmakers holding office today will support fair pay. We look forward to President Obama signing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law very soon.”
