House Passage of Legislation to Undo Damage from Supreme Court's Ledbetter Ruling is a Victory for America's Women
Statement of Debra L. Ness, President, National Partnership for Women & Families on House Passage of the 'Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2007'
WASHINGTON, DC — July 31, 2007 — "In passing the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, the House of Representatives today took a very welcome and badly needed step to restore protections against gender discrimination in the workplace. This bill would undo the effects of a Supreme Court ruling that amounted to nothing less than an assault on the rights of working women. Today, the House said again that our nation’s anti-discrimination laws are intended to protect workers like Lilly Ledbetter from egregious wage discrimination. This measure deserves to become law very soon. We urge the Senate to act quickly, and President Bush to reconsider his threat to veto the measure. This legislation reasserts America’s commitment to fairness, and restores longstanding protections against discrimination."
