Supreme Court Ruling is a Serious Setback for American Women
National Women’s Health Leader Warns that Ruling Deals a Significant Blow to Women’s Health
Statement of Debra L. Ness, President, National Partnership for Women & Families
WASHINGTON, DC — April 18, 2007 — "The Supreme Court today significantly undermined more than 30 years of established law requiring abortion restrictions to include an exception to safeguard women’s health. Instead, the Court decided that politicians will make medical decisions that should be made by doctors.
Justice Ginsburg, the lone woman remaining on the Court, powerfully notes in dissent that today’s ruling is ‘alarming’ and ‘cannot be understood as anything other than an effort to chip away at a right declared again and again by this Court.' We could not agree more.
It is a sad day for all Americans who believe that the Constitution should protect an individual’s right to make personal decisions without intrusion from government. This decision is a stark reminder of the importance of having judges and justices who will respect and protect our fundamental freedoms."
