Mont. House Budget Deal Excludes Plan To Restore Federal Family Planning Funds
March 21, 2013 — As part of a last-minute budget deal with the Republican majority, Montana House Democrats on Tuesday did not attempt to restore $4.6 million in federal family planning funds to a state spending bill, The Missoulian reports.
The federal Title X family planning money would have been distributed through the state to 25 clinics that serve about 26,000 people annually, most of whom are low-income women. In February, Republicans on a budget subcommittee removed the funding from the budget bill because they did not want public money going to Planned Parenthood of Montana.
Stacey Anderson, director of public affairs for PPMT, said it is "incredibly disheartening" that House lawmakers failed to restore the funding.
However, Lindsay Love, communications director for PPMT, added that Gov. Steve Bullock (D) and Democratic lawmakers have indicated they will try to add the funding into the final version of the bill. The measure now heads to the Senate (Dennison, The Missoulian, 3/19).
