Coalition of Women's Groups Backs Reproductive Health Provisions in N.Y. Women's Equality Act

March 6, 2013 — On Monday, a new coalition lobbying for Gov. Andrew Cuomo's (D) legislative package known as the Women's Equality Act announced its support for including measures to strengthen reproductive rights, the AP/Wall Street Journal reports.

The reproductive health measure has not been publicly released but faces strong opposition from state Senate Republicans. According to the AP/Journal, inclusion of the measure could threaten passage of the entire package, which also would strengthen equal pay laws, address human trafficking, and prohibit job and housing discrimination against mothers and pregnant women.

The New York Women's Equality Coalition -- comprised of 500 women's groups and businesses -- said it is working closely with Cuomo to lobby lawmakers and gain their support for all 10 measures.

Donna Lieberman -- executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, which is a member of the coalition -- said the 10-point proposal is "a whole package" (AP/Wall Street Journal, 3/4).
