'Personhood' Supporters Fall Short in Attempt To Qualify for Nev. Ballot
June 20, 2012 — Supporters of a Nevada "personhood" initiative on Friday said they do not have the required number of signatures to qualify for the November ballot, the AP/Las Vegas Sun reports. The initiative's organizers would have needed 72,000 signatures by June 19, according to the AP/Sun.
Personhood Nevada's initiative, called "The Right to Live for Young and Old Alike," would have amended the state constitution to state, "No person shall be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law. As used in this section, the word 'person' includes every human being from the beginning of biological development until death."
The measure could have prohibited some forms of birth control, fertility treatments and embryonic stem cell research, according to the AP/Sun.
The Nevada Prolife Coalition withdrew a similar measure in March to help Personhood Nevada gather signatures for its proposal (Chereb, AP/Las Vegas Sun, 6/15).
