Iowa Senate Rejects Measure That Would Bar Public Funding of Abortion in Rape, Incest Cases

April 23, 2012 — The Iowa Senate on Thursday narrowly rejected a House-approved proposal that would prohibit public funding of abortion in cases of rape or incest, the Omaha World-Herald reports.

Current state law allows public funding of the procedure in cases of rape, incest or to save a woman's life.

State Sen. David Johnson (R), a supporter of the proposal, said that polls show that U.S. residents oppose taxpayer funding for abortion.

State Sen. Jack Hatch (D) opposed the measure, saying that its restrictions would be unconstitutional (AP/Omaha World-Herald, 4/20).
