Kan. Senate Adds Amendment on Abortion Training for Medical Residents to Budget Bill
March 23, 2012 — The Kansas Senate on Wednesday voted 39-1 to approve a state budget after amending the bill to restrict abortion training for medical residents at the University of Kansas Medical Center, the AP/Wichita Eagle reports.
The amendment's language comes from a bill passed by the House Federal and State Affairs Committee. It would prohibit the use of state money for medical students' abortion training and would require that the training take place at non-state facilities.
The issue has prompted debate over whether restricting abortion training at the medical center would put its accreditation at risk. Supporters of the amendment said it would allow medical center officials to make decisions about abortion training within certain limits (Milburn, AP/Wichita Eagle, 3/22).
