Wash. Abortion Coverage Parity Bill Could Be Revived in Special Session

March 16, 2012 — A Washington bill (HB 2330) that would require health plans that cover maternity care to also cover abortion care could be revived during a special session convened by Gov. Chris Gregoire (D), the AP/Seattle Times reports.

The bill is sponsored by Rep. Eileen Cody (D). Although Gregoire told lawmakers they should focus mainly on budget-related bills in the special session, Cody has said she hopes to address the abortion coverage measure (Kaminsky, AP/Seattle Times, 3/14).

The bill previously passed the House, and Democrats had expected to have the necessary Senate votes for approval earlier this month. However, two attempts to bring it to the floor were voted down (Women's Health Policy Report, 3/6).
