Antiabortion Summer Camp Teaches Teens To Become Activists

August 6, 2012 — A summer camp in Bryan, Texas aims to help teenagers become effective antiabortion-rights activists by teaching them how to lobby state lawmakers, to promote the cause in their communities and other skills, the Texas Tribune/New York Times reports.

Reveal summer camp, which is organized by Texas Right to Life, is a two-week overnight camp featuring antiabortion-rights guest speakers, discussions and workshops on topics such as communicating effectively and starting a student organization. Campers have the option of viewing YouTube videos of supposed abortion procedures, according to the Times. The camp also features conventional summer camp activities, such as swimming and crafts.

Jen Rumpf, a counselor and president of Texas A&M's Pro-Life Aggies, said one purpose of the camp is to teach teens to avoid using antiabortion "turnoffs," such as being overly aggressive and judgmental, when speaking about the issue. Counselors show campers how to engage in gentler, compassion-based forms of persuasion, Rumpf said (Smith, Texas Tribune/New York Times, 8/2).
