July 3, 2012 — A bipartisan group of female senators on Monday proposed a resolution to honor the 222,000 Catholic nuns who have served in the U.S. since the nation's founding, Roll Call reports.
The timing of the resolution coincides with a two-week bus tour by a group of nuns to promote their social justice work and oppose the House Republican budget proposal.
The resolution "recognizes the Catholic Sisters' fulfillment of their vital missions to teach our children, care for the sick, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, lead major institutions, demand corporate responsibility and fight for policies that promote human dignity," according to a statement by Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Mary Landrieu (D-La.) and Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.).
Other senators who are co-sponsoring the measure include Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) and Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) (Shiner, Roll Call, 7/2).
