“The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Janus v. AFSCME Council 31 will help determine the future strength of one of the most powerful voices for the rights of women and working people in this country. When nurses, teachers, home care and child care providers, police officers, firefighters and other public service workers can come together in strong unions, they win better wages, employment benefits and working conditions that improve workplaces, communities and public services for all of us. By putting the strength of public sector unions in jeopardy, this case threatens our ability to live and work in a fair and safe country.
This latest threat to working people comes as the country is already reeling from the Trump administration’s relentless attacks on women, low-wage workers and communities of color. The administration has undermined overtime pay protections, proposed taking away workers’ tips, blocked an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission effort to identify and root out pay discrimination, allowed states to impose work requirements for Medicaid and other key supports, proposed deep funding cuts to essential programs and protections, and much more. In this environment, when the dignity and economic security of working people are constantly threatened, strong unions are critical.
The National Partnership for Women & Families is proud to be standing with our union allies and other partners to fight for the right of people to organize and build a stronger and more equitable nation. As thousands of people made clear at rallies across the country on Saturday, this case is about freedom and opportunity for all of us. We will not be silent about yet another attempt to rig the system against women and working people in favor of the wealthy and powerful. No matter the outcome, this case will not weaken the resolve of women and working people to continue coming together to stand up for what is right.”
