Women’s Leader Lauds Supreme Court Ruling in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin
Statement of Judith L. Lichtman, Senior Advisor, National Partnership for Women & Families
Washington, D.C. — June 24, 2013 —
"Today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling in a critically important affirmative action case is good news for higher education, for all students, and for our country. We are extremely pleased that it leaves intact critical precedent that allows for race-conscious admissions policies at colleges and universities. This is a victory for diversity and equal opportunity.
Affirmative action is an essential tool for promoting diversity and leveling the playing field for those who have faced discrimination. The educational benefits of diversity are clear and help to prepare students for the workforce. The University of Texas admission policy is fair and carefully crafted and we believe it deserves to be, and will be, upheld by the Court of Appeals."
