Latest Health Bill Remains ‘Fundamentally Flawed’ and ‘Devastating for Women’

Statement of Debra L. Ness, President, National Partnership for Women & Families
WASHINGTON, D.C. — July 13, 2017 —

“Senate Republicans continue to play politics with the health, well-being and economic security of America’s women and families with their revised health care repeal bill, released today. Like the versions before it, this harmful bill is still devastating for women and it’s clear that no amount of backroom deal-making can fix it. This legislation is fundamentally flawed – and fundamentally cruel.

The latest version of the cruel health care repeal bill still rips coverage from millions, drives up costs, repeals critical consumer protections, guts Medicaid, defunds Planned Parenthood and expands harmful abortion coverage restrictions. And it would be especially detrimental for low-income women, women of color and older women – while giving generous tax cuts to wealthy corporations. The latest changes are just window dressing on the core terrible bill.

Medicaid provides access to essential health care for millions of women and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is the greatest advance for women’s health in a generation. It’s time congressional leaders end this ruthless attack on our health care system and women’s access to care."
