Confirm Her Now, Women's Leader Says
Statement of Judith L. Lichtman, Senior Advisor, National Partnership for Women & Families
Washington, D.C. — August 5, 2009 —
“The United States Senate has before it a historic nominee for U.S. Supreme Court Justice who is a brilliant jurist, who has outstanding legal qualifications and a demonstrated commitment to equal rights and equal justice. So we are here this morning to say: Confirm her now!
Judge Sonia Sotomayor conducted herself admirably at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. She answered the toughest questions, demonstrated extraordinary command of the law, and kept her composure in the face of unreasonable and sometimes-baseless charges. So we say: Confirm her now.
Judge Sotomayor has an exceptional resume and an inspiring life story. 110 Justices have sat on our highest court. Only two have been female and none have been Hispanic. It’s time to change that. Confirm her now.
Judge Sotomayor has won support from Senators across the ideological spectrum, from Patrick Leahy to Lindsey Graham and with good reason. Confirm her now.
We are here today to ask every single Senator, from every state, to vote to confirm Judge Sonia Sotomayor this week, and make this historic appointment one we can all
celebrate today. Confirm her now.
