On Anniversary of Roe, Pro-Choice Leader Urges Lawmakers to Protect Women's Right to Choose, Access to Repro Health Services

Statement of Debra L. Ness, President National Partnership for Women & Families
Washington, D.C. — January 22, 2010 —
“Today, as we mark the 37th anniversary of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, women's access to abortion services is still under attack — and we’re still not doing nearly enough in this country to prevent unplanned pregnancies.

We are pleased that some of the extreme anti-choice policies of the Bush era have ended, but we also recognize that abortion opponents are unrelenting in their efforts to deny services to women in need. Most recently, opponents of choice have gone so far as to use health reform as a political bargaining tool to take away the insurance coverage for abortion services that most women have now. These assaults on women's access to reproductive health care mean that women's fundamental right to choose is far from secure.

At the same time that we ask lawmakers to remember that comprehensive and affordable health care includes access to abortion services for women, we also urge policymakers to step up efforts to ensure that women have accurate information, relationship skills, and health resources to ensure that all pregnancies are planned.”
