Legal Fellowship Application Opportunity for 2020

The National Partnership for Women & Families is a nonprofit, non partisan 501(c)3 organization that fights for equality for all women and families. We seek a highly motivated, creative and detail-oriented third-year law student, judicial clerk, or other recent law school graduate interested in applying for legal fellowships such as Equal Justice Works or others, to begin in September 2020.

The legal fellow will be situated within the National Partnership’s reproductive health and rights team, and will work with and across all three of our program teams. Our reproductive health and rights program works at the state and federal levels on reproductive rights policy to defeat attacks on reproductive health and advance a proactive agenda; our health policy program works on issues of health care access and affordability, delivery system reform and health equity; and our workplace program advances policies that help to improve women’s economic security, such as paid sick days, paid family and medical leave, equal pay, sexual harassment, and the rights of pregnant workers.

National Partnership staff will work with applicants to develop a project proposal that uses a racial justice lens to focus on the intersection of our work on reproductive health and rights, health care and workplace policy. Work will involve conducting legal research and policy analysis, conceptualizing and creating legal and policy documents, and collaborating with coalition partners. We are particularly interested in projects that address one of the following topics, though we are happy to coordinate with potential fellows on other topics of mutual interest:

  • Criminalization of pregnancy and parenthood
  • Applying a disability lens to workplace, health and reproductive health policy
  • How workplace benefits and reproductive health intersect with mental health policy
  • Supporting the development of a health care workforce that meets both patient and worker needs

We will help the fellow improve their legal writing skills, policy analysis, and knowledge of existing proactive and defensive efforts around workplace policy, health policy and reproductive health and rights. We will also facilitate the fellow’s exposure to these areas of policy, introducing them to coalition partners and helping to give their work a platform in these movements. We will work with the fellow to ensure they receive mentorship and supervision as a developing policy expert.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must be rising 3Ls or recent law graduates
  • Creativity and an interest in working across multiple issue areas
  • Facility with a fast-paced, demanding environment
  • Excellent research skills, strategic judgment, and the desire to be part of a collaborative team
  • Excellent interpersonal, communications, and persuasive writing skills
  • Prior experience in reproductive health and women’s rights a plus
