Reproductive Health Policy Counsel

The National Partnership is seeking a Reproductive Health Policy Counsel to help lead the organization’s legal as well as legislative and government relations reproductive health policy work at the federal and state levels.

The National Partnership for Women & Families is a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy organization dedicated to promoting access to quality health care, fairness in the workplace, and policies that help women and men balance their work and family responsibilities. The National Partnership believes it takes vigorous, skilled, and deliberate communications and advocacy with policymakers, the public, and the media to ensure that women’s access to quality and affordable reproductive health services and information is adequately addressed through our public policies and programs, both in the existing public health infrastructure and in the broader private health care market as health reform is implemented.

Under the supervision of the Director of Reproductive Health Programs, the Reproductive Health Policy Counsel will be a key part of the National Partnership’s reproductive health legal and advocacy efforts at the federal and state level. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Tracking state and national legislation impacting reproductive health and access to abortion; Analyzing national and state legislative proposals, regulations and policies affecting reproductive health; drafting, publishing and disseminating information about the impact of these proposals to policymakers and the public;
  • Serving as one of the National Partnership’s policy representatives to state lawmakers, Congress, public health and agency staff and to the media, as well as to progressive partners and in relevant coalitions;
  • Assisting in publication of the Women’s Health Policy Report, an email summary of reproductive health coverage in major media outlets distributed to 70,000 subscribers five days per week;
  • Researching, writing, editing, and updating issue analyses, fact sheets, talking points, letters to policymakers, staff memos, testimony, and other key policy and advocacy documents;
  • Updating reproductive health website content, including In the Courts tracking state legislation and the website on state parental consent and notice laws;
  • Identifying policies that advance the National Partnership's mission and implementing legislative strategy on key issues.
  • Recruiting and supervising legal and policy interns.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a creative, self-motivated, strategic thinker and will ideally have minimum 2-3 years’ experience in the reproductive health policy arena. JD degree required as well as excellent research, written and oral communications skills, strong intrapersonal skills, and the ability to work well in a team or with a coalition. Legislative policy experience and/or direct lobbying experience a plus. Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess proven initiative and follow-through, the ability to work quickly and well under pressure, and a commitment to women’s health and rights.
